Teen holds book drive Thursday

Teen entrepreneur Sara Sigal, founder of Booklings and member of WIT - Whatever It Takes (doingwit.org) is holding a Book Drive 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday July 14 at the Diesel Bookstore, in the Del Mar Highlands shopping center, 12925 El Camino Real. Birds of Torrey Pines subject of nature talk at state reserve

World of Houseplants exhibit opens Saturday at botanic garden

The San Diego Botanic Garden opens its Summer exhibition, World of Houseplants Saturday, July 16 and runs through Sept. 5, featuring air plants, aroids, carnivorous plants and wax plants, including rare species and everyday houseplants. The Garden will offer classes and hand-on workshops about caring for plants from begonias to bromeliads, potting techniques and supplies. The garden is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Monday. Non-member admission is $12-$18. Members of the Garden and other gardens participating in the American Horticultural Society’s Reciprocal Admissions Program receive free admission. Members get exclusive access to the exhibition 9 to 10 a.m. Sundays. Entrance to the exhibition includes access to the rest of the Garden’s 37 acres during the same visit. Visit sdbgarden.org.

Animal shelter offers Pets for Patriots program

The Pets for Patriotsadoption program at Rancho Coastal Humane Society waives adoption fees for veterans. As with any other adoption, the goal is to make a lifelong match. Urban Corps holds open house

Urban Corps of San Diego County holds its North County open house 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 at 2200 Micro Place. During this drop-in event, guests can tour the facility, learn more about Urban Corps’ programs and sign-up to be a Corpsmember. Urban Corps of San Diego County provides young adults with paid job training and community service. The Escondido Adult School offers a virtual class on Medicare 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 13 via Zoom. Hawaiian event Saturday at library

Two new art exhibits open at the Fallbrook Library

The Fallbrook Public Library holds a free exhibit of self portraits, titled, “How I See Myself” and bronze sculptures by Marsha Gertenbach-Meers Monday July 11 through Sept. 2 at 124 S. Football officials sought for youth through high school games

The nonprofit San Diego County Football Officials Association is looking for males and females, at least 18 years old, to receive training to become football officials for youth through high school varsity football games in North County and throughout San Diego County. Pay begins at $66 for each youth tackle game and there are opportunities to advance to college and professional levels of football. Community forum on farmland conservation Wednesday

Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church is partnering with Voices for Children to provide backpacks, school supplies and new clothing for 85 foster children and for 35 children at BLAST, a Christian-based after school program at Los Pen Elementary. Boogie Woogie Ball to benefit Wounded Warrior Homes

The 1st Annual Boogie Woogie Ball benefiting Wounded Warrior Homes, originally planned for July, is now is set for Nov. 4 at the Veterans Association of North County 1617 Mission Ave. The San Marcos-based nonprofit is celebrating 10 years serving veterans and the event will feature live 1940’s music from the jazz quartet ‘Gin & Tonix’ along with dancing, dinner, and silent and live auctions. Families needed for Type 1 diabetes study

Families with adolescent children with Type 1 diabetes are being sought for a study by graduate student Jessica Preciado, under the direction of professor Sharon Hamill, from the Psychology Department at California State University San Marcos. This study is designed to explore Type 1 diabetes in adolescents ages 13-18 and how families manage the disease. Participants will complete a brief online survey at their convenience. All eligible participants who complete the survey will receive $5 (maximum of $15 per family). Study results will be made available upon request. The San Marcos Writers’ Critique Group meets from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays via Zoom for serious writers to critique each other’s writings.
