The Cowabunga Collection's Limited Edition set is now available for preorder, but with a hefty price tag of $149.99, is it worth the investment?

Konami recently announced it will be releasing a limited edition collector's set of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection in collaboration with Nickelodeon. The physical collector's box will include a variety of one-of-a-kind items, such as exclusive artwork from TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman. It will also, of course, include the 13 classic games that fans have come to know and love.

This edition is currently available for preorder at various outlets and is priced at a whopping $149.99. The Standard Edition, which is set to release sometime this year, will cost $39.99 and includes the same games the Collectors Edition offers. With over $100 added to the asking price, many fans are questioning whether this version is worth the investment. Here's what the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection Limited Edition offers, where you can pick it up, and if it's really a must-have for fans of this beloved series.

Like the Standard Edition, the Limited Edition will include many of the classic TMNT games that were featured for Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Game Boy and in the arcade. It will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Currently, the Limited Edition set is only available for purchase through US and Canada based retailers.

Unlike the Standard Edition, the limited version will include a range of exclusive and collectible materials. Konami has stated that this is a one-time, limited run production. Therefore, the items listed below are unlikely to be produced outside of this event anytime soon.

The Limited Edition can currently be pre-ordered from Amazon, Best Buy, and Target for all the previously mentioned games consoles. For those wishing to purchase or pick up the item from their local games store, it will be worth contacting them in advance, as they will likely have to preorder them themselves. At this point in time, there is no difference in price between the various stores.

Ultimately, fans of the franchise are being asked to spend an additional $110 for a figurine, poster, book, badges, cards, and boxes. If sold separately and removed from the nostalgia that this series undoubtedly brings, many fans of the franchise would likely scoff at the idea of spending this sum on such items. While it's difficult to judge the quality and content of some of these collectibles without physically seeing them, from the images that have been presented so far, they appear lack-luster at best.

At its current price, it feels like Konami is trying to squeeze as much cash from this devoted fan-base as it possibly can. With the series being nearly 40 years old, Konami likely realizes that there is a great deal of sentimental attachment for these pizza-loving turtles and has consequently decided to use this to their advantage. While fans are likely happy to pay a premium on these products, this price tag will likely come as a slap in the face for those who have already dedicated much time and resources to the series.

For anyone who loves the franchise or these retro-games just pick up the Standard Edition. It's $39.99 price tag evens out to about $3 per game, which seems like a good deal. However, if you are a TMNT fanatic who must have every collectible related to the franchise you won't need any convincing. The Limited Edition is for you.
