Finding good Mexican food is not the easiest, but the Lake District has a hidden gem

I want to start by admitting I'm not a fan of spicy food, so getting asked to go to a Mexican had me sweating before I even found out where it was.

Bandito Burrito is on Main Road in Windermere, I was told, but as I walked up and down I couldn't see it for the life of me. I walked past it a couple of times then like magic it seemed to jump out of nowhere.

At first glance, I was a little worried. It didn't look as appealing as I had been led to believe. But like a trooper, I poked my head in the door and asked for a table. I was greeted with a friendly smile and shown to a spot in the back.

As I took my seat, I looked around and it all looked a little upside-down like they didn't have enough space to store what they needed. I didn't find this a problem, I was interested in the food, - starting with the nachos as they had been recommended.

I also couldn't visit without getting a burrito. Only the second I've ever had in my life.

The waitress was really nice and grabbed me a coffee while I decided - I went with the chicken and chorizo, and the pulled pork Nachos. As I sat sipping on my coffee on an old school desk I spent a few moments looking at the dozens of pictures of cows on the wall, I know it seemed a little random but it felt right.

Both the nachos and burrito came out together and the burrito was wrapped up in its tin foil cover. It looked like a baby swaddled in a blanket. I looked at the nachos expecting perfect little triangles covered in cheese with my toppings dumped on top, What I didn't expect was traditional nachos covered in cheese and sauce with the most hip-swaying salsa I have ever tasted.

I didn't know where to start and it was at this point I realised my eyes were much bigger than my belly. I had ordered two full-size meals and didn't for the life of me know how I would eat it all.

But, I dug in. The nachos were crisp with cheese oozing from them but at the same time they were soft enough to pack on the pulled pork, sour cream and salsa, then I bundled this into my mouth it was an explosion of flavour. I couldn't believe that nachos could taste this good, I couldn't stop myself I was shovelling it in faster and faster. I soon felt I would have no hips left to shake.

I needed to stop and I needed to stop fast. I had a burrito the size of a newborn baby to eat as well and I had no idea where I was going to fit it. It was time for a breather and a drink to wash it down with a Jarritos Guava bottle of pop. It was just what I need to wash the food down.

As I mentioned earlier I was worried about the spices but when I was served my food they offered sauces which are where the heat would come from. I politely declined.

Now it was time to tackle the burrito and at this point, I really was pleased I had loose-fitting trousers on to give myself room to expand. As I unwrapped, I could see how perfectly it was wrapped and it was jam-packed with filling.

My problem now was how best to eat it? Do I pick it up and just take a bite, use my knife and fork or beat it like a pinata? I cut the end off and got my first glance at the stuffed burrito.

Now this was a taste sensation and it felt like a Mariachi band was playing in my mouth and all I could think about was how I was going to explode after eating all this food, but not in the way you might think.

Nachos with pulled pork were £9 and the Chicken and Chorizo burrito was £8, If I'm honest either one of these could be shared for a light meal or you could make a pig out of yourself and try to eat both.

I didn't succeed at eating them and they kindly re-wrapped the rest of my burrito to take home with me and have for my tea.

When I was chatting with the staff about this she said she has to do this as well so don't worry, if I want to warm it up just pop it in the oven for a little while.

Would I go back? Without a doubt. Would I try to eat two meals? Not a chance, although it did re-heat well and tasted just as nice for my lunch the next day.
